About the Chapel
The story of the Augustinians in San Fernando, Cebu, is one of faith, resilience, and community building. It begins in 2013, when the Augustinians first established their presence in the local community of Brgy. Greenhills. This marked the inauguration of an extension campus of the Colegio del Santo Niño, based in Cebu City. The extension campus was designed to serve the educational needs of the local community, initially offering nursery and kindergarten levels. By 2014, the school began its operations, with friars from the Provincialate community regularly visiting to oversee its activities and provide spiritual guidance.
The early years of the Augustinian mission in San Fernando were led by pioneering friars. In 2018, Fr. Dominador Besares, OSA, and Fr. Cleopas, OSA, became the first friars to reside in the town, dedicating themselves to the growth of the school and the spiritual well-being of the community. However, their efforts faced a significant challenge when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, forcing the closure of the school campus. Despite this setback, the Augustinians remained committed to their pastoral mission. Friars from the Provincialate community continued to serve the people of San Fernando by taking turns to celebrate weekly masses, ensuring that the spiritual needs of the faithful were met.
The Augustinian presence in San Fernando took a new turn in February 2024. During the Ordinary Provincial Chapter of that year, a decision was made to establish a new residence in Greenhills, San Fernando. This residence, named the Greenhills San Fernando Residence, was created to strengthen the Augustinians’ mission in the area. Fr. Candido Saladaga Jr., OSA, was appointed as its first local superior and was officially installed on July 10, 2024. He was joined by Fr. Ariel Panimdim, OSA, and Fray King Villacastin Nepangue, OSA, as members of the community. This new residence symbolized a renewed commitment to serving the people of San Fernando and fostering spiritual growth in the region.
Amid these developments, a significant spiritual landmark emerged in the town: a chapel dedicated to the image of Ecce Homo. Although still under construction, the shrine quickly became a focal point for devotees and pilgrims from nearby areas. Its growing popularity reflected the deep faith of the local community and their connection to the Augustinian mission.
From its humble beginnings as an extension campus to the establishment of a new residence and the construction of a sacred shrine, the Augustinian journey in San Fernando, Cebu, is a testament to their enduring dedication to education, pastoral care, and spiritual enrichment. Despite challenges, the Augustinians have continued to adapt and thrive, leaving a lasting impact on the community they serve.
