Augustinian Vicariate of Indonesia

Vicariate of Christus Totus

A Testament of Endurance, Growth, and Evangelical Zeal

The presence of the Order of Saint Augustine in West Papua, Indonesia, is a living testament to missionary resilience, fraternal collaboration, and faithful commitment to the Gospel. As of January 2024, the Order joyfully marked 71 years of its presence in this culturally rich yet socially and politically complex region.

The initial arrival of the Augustinians in West Papua traces back to 1953, led by Dutch friars whose dedication planted the first seeds of the Order’s mission in Indonesian soil. However, it wasn’t until 1986—thirty-three years later—that a more structured and locally grounded formation of the Augustinian presence truly took root. This marked a new phase in the community’s life as it began to raise and nurture vocations from among the local faithful.

The evolving needs of the mission and the growing number of local vocations led to the canonical establishment of the Augustinian Vicariate of Christus Totus during the Order’s General Chapter in 2013. This new circumscription initially remained under the jurisdiction of the Dutch Province, continuing the legacy of its founding missionaries.

A Shift Toward Greater Fraternal Bond with Asia

In 2016, a pivotal moment occurred during the Intermediate General Chapter (IGC) held in Abuja, Nigeria. In that assembly, the Capitular Fathers gave 44 Placet (Yes) votes in support of the proposal to transfer the dependency of the Vicariate of West Papua from the Province of the Netherlands to the Province of Santo Niño de Cebu – Philippines. This formal support affirmed the desire for deeper collaboration within the Asia-Pacific region and paved the way for a new chapter in the Vicariate’s life.

In the following year, 2017, during the Vicariate Chapter, the majority of the solemnly professed friars expressed their intention to be affiliated with the Province of Cebu. This marked a new era of communion, support, and growth. The friars of Papua are now part of a broader fraternity, benefitting from shared formation programs, international mission collaborations, and academic exchanges with communities and institutions in the Philippines.

Community Life and Apostolic Outreach

Today, the Vicariate flourishes across four dioceses: Manokwari–Sorong, Jayapura, Ketapang (West Kalimantan), and Jakarta. It comprises nine vibrant communities, ranging from remote mission stations in highland villages to urban apostolates in diocesan centers. The friars are actively engaged in pastoral care, formation of local clergy and religious, education, youth ministry, and socio-charitable outreach, especially among Indigenous Papuan communities.

Educational institutions such as the Villanova Catholic Junior and Senior High Schools, along with their accompanying dormitories, are signs of the Order’s commitment to holistic formation. These schools serve as beacons of learning, spiritual growth, and social mobility for many young Papuans, especially those from underserved backgrounds.

Beyond education, the Vicariate is deeply involved in justice, peace, and ecological integrity. In collaboration with local NGOs and religious congregations, the friars advocate for the rights of the marginalized, environmental protection, and the dignity of women affected by domestic violence.

Strength in Diversity, Hope Amidst Challenges

As of early 2024, the Vicariate has grown to include:

  • 54 solemnly professed friars (including 38 priests, 4 deacons, and 12 brothers),
  • 24 simply professed friars,
  • 7 novices, and
  • 13 postulants, alongside aspirants undergoing vocational discernment.

While the Vicariate thrives, it also faces external and internal challenges. The ongoing political unrest and social tensions in Papua, coupled with economic disparity and cultural shifts, pose real difficulties in sustaining local vocations. Internally, the formation of capable leaders in spirituality, theology, finance, and pastoral ministry remains a priority. Despite these, the spirit of “Cor Unum et Anima Una in Deum” (“One heart and one soul in God”) continues to inspire and strengthen the community.

Towards the Future: A Province in the Making

The future looks promising for the Vicariate of Christus Totus. With a steady stream of vocations, the continued support of the Order’s leadership, and the generous accompaniment of the Province of Santo Niño de Cebu, hopes are high that within the next five to seven years, this missionary circumscription will blossom into a full-fledged Province of the Order in the Asia-Pacific region.

Such a development would not only affirm the vitality of the Augustinian charism in Indonesia but also signify the fruitfulness of intercultural missionary cooperation. It is a testament to the enduring call to bring Christ to all, especially to the peripheries—geographical, cultural, and spiritual.

“The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few.” (Luke 10:2) The Augustinians in Papua continue to answer this call with courage, compassion, and joyful witness.
