Brief History

In 1982, the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu community began constructing a chapel in lower Mohon, Talisay. The chapel, completed in 1983, features a modern design and a churchyard with a rotunda housing a replica of the Santo Niño de Cebu on top, facing the chapel facade..

The aim was to create a basic community centered around the devotion to the Santo Niño de Cebu. The project expanded to include the creation of a new parish to ease the workload of local priests and improve pastoral care in nearby barangays.

On 20 January 1985, the late Cardinal Vidal signed a decree establishing the Santo Niño Parish in Mohon. Fr. Ambrosio Galindez was appointed as the first parish priest and was installed on 10 February 1985. By the end of 1985, the parish was officially recognized as a religious residence. The parish was later dedicated to both Santo Niño de Cebu and Our Lady of Consolation.

The work of the church has been augmented by the presence of four religious communities in the parish including the Augustinian Contemplative Sisters (Sto. Niño Monastery), the Augustinian Friars (Augustinian Novitiate and Prayer House), the Augustinian Sisters of Divine Love (Divine Love High School of Mohon) and the Augustinian Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows. The first three belong to the Augustinian Family while the last follows the Rule and spirituality of St. Augustine. With the presence of all four and the overall role of Community as the way of life, people invariably refer to the parish as “Augustinian City.”
