Born on March 3, 1921 in the municipality of Dueñas, Iloilo, Brother Emeterio Lazo has learned since his young days to contemplate and love the silent and rustic surroundings of his native village. The eldest of eleven brothers and sisters (the youngest of whom is Fr. Edgardo Lazo, OSA), he grew up with a strong sense of responsibility and discipline. No wonder that when the Second World War broke out, even at the tender age of 19 ad having started only the first years of secondary school, he readily joined the local militia to fight the foreign invaders.

Immediately after the war, he resumed his high school studies even if he was already in his middle 20s. Upon graduation, he decided to join the Augustinian Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus of the Philippines (Under the Vicariate of the Philippines) which runs the biggest school in the area, the Colegio de San Agustin (now University). Although at first, he wanted to become a priest, his Superiors counseled him to become a lay brother because of his rather advanced age. Considering such advice as the will of God, he readily accepted it and proceeded to enter the formation program for lay brothers at the Convent of San Agustin in Manila.

He professed the simple vows on June 6, 1951 and made his solemn profession on June 9, 1954, both in the famous church and convent of San Agustin. His first assignment as a solemn professed brother was as a Sacristan in the newly founded Colegio San Agustin of Bacolod City. From then on he received different assignments in the convents of Manila, Cebu ad even Zaragoza (Spain). After the creation of the Province of Santo Niño de Cebu, he was continually assigned as member of the formation teams of the Province’s three formation houses. He was even the Acting Prior of San Agustin Center of Studies in Quezon City for two years (1994-1996). At the time of his death, on March 18, 1997, because of brain tumor, he was a member of Formation Team and Spiritual Director of novices.
